Taking into account the results of independent laboratory testing and unofficial road trials, using tungsten disulphide (WS2) additives in oil for road transport operators is a no-brainer, according to Techenomics.
The fluid management provider, which is distributing the unique additives throughout its network, says the benefits far outweigh the minimal extra cost.
The nano-sized WS2 additives have superior lubrication properties resulting in lower operating temperatures, and providing greater power and fuel efficiency as well as reducing component wear.
Techenomics CEO Chris Adsett says independent tests at the company’s accredited laboratories demonstrate that the NanoLub WS2 additives easily outperform other additives.
“Our tests have shown an improvement of up to 259% in time to failure when using WS2 in engine oils over other so-called nano additives that do not use tungsten.”
He says there have also been up to 74% and 43% improvements in time to failure respectively when used in gear and transmission oils.
A recent unofficial road trial has supported the laboratory results.
A businessman added WS2 to the engine oil of an LPG-powered 4-litre, 6-cylinder Ford being used in an extensive amount of motoring on non-urban roads.
Before using WS2 his fuel economy was 17.4 litres per 100 kilometres and during the trial, this dropped to 15.2 litres, representing a 14.5% saving.
Chris Adsett says all indications point to being able to achieve similar results in long distance trucking operations.
“Typically, 18-wheelers use approximately 1000 litres of fuel on long haul trips. At a low retail cost of say $1.22 per litre, a 14.5% saving on fuel on these trips would equate to almost $177.
“Many trucks make eight of these trips a week, thus making savings of more than $1415 possible, and over a four-week period this amounts to more than $5660.”
He says the use of WS2 additives would result in a maximum increase of $2 per litre in the cost of 15W40 engine oil, taking the oil cost to about $5 per litre.
The cost of a monthly oil change would be around $220, he says, considerably less than the savings in fuel costs.
Chris Adsett says these results should make the use of WS2 additives mandatory for all transport operators and with many thousands of trucks running these routes each day it really is a no-brainer, not to mention much kinder to the environment with WS2 also decreasing harmful emissions.
“WS2 is one of the most lubricous materials known to science and has a coefficient of friction of just 0.03. Its dry lubricity is unmatched by any other substance.
“WS2 offers excellent lubrication under extreme conditions of load and temperature, and has been proven to be effective from minus 273 degrees Centigrade up to 650 degrees. It offers excellent thermal stability and oxidation resistance at higher temperatures,” he adds.
